Position Summary

The Development and Grants Manager implements strategies to cultivate long-term, comprehensive relationships with individual, corporations and institutional grant-making organizations. This position oversees revenue reporting and conducts in-depth analysis of the Deborah's Place donor database to identify opportunity areas. In conjunction with the CEO and Development Director, this position plays a key role in developing fundraising strategy. The Development and Grants Manager also maintains the annual grants calendar, drafting and submitting LOIs, applications, proposals and reports, and researches new prospects to add to the portfolio.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Donor Relations

  • With the Development Director and Chief Executive Officer, develop and execute individual and corporate giving strategies that include donor and prospect research and cultivation, effective communication strategies and cultivation events.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of donor data to create and manage portfolios for the CEO, Development Director and other solicitors.
  • Report on and track performance on an ongoing basis to ensure progress on meeting fundraising goals.
  • Represent the organization at external events.
  • Track all donor relations activities in Raiser's Edge database.

 Grants Management

  • Develop and manage annual grants calendar.
  • With the Development Director and Chief Executive Officer, develop and execute institutional giving strategies that include prospect research and cultivation, effective communication strategies and stewardship activities.
  • Write annual boilerplates (proposal, report, LOI, cover letter templates, etc.) and customize materials as needed to align with funder priorities and requirements.
  • Work with other departments (Finance, Program, Development, Facilities, etc.) as required to secure information needed to meet funder deadlines and requirements.
  • Track grants activities in Raiser's Edge, including deadlines, submissions, notes and other information that leads to the sustainability of institutional relationships; ensure that all communication and activities with funders are documented accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Cultivate and maintain working relationships with program officers and grantor contacts, including scheduling and staffing site visits.
  • Work with Development Director to assess and leverage Board and committee members' institutional relationships.
  • Maintain funder files, regularly reviewing funder status and organizational compatibility with funder priorities.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.

Required Licensure and/or Certification: N/A

Job Experience: Minimum 2 years working in institutional giving in a nonprofit organization, including managing relationships with corporate and foundation partners required. Minimum 1 year of research/data analysis experience preferred. Donor database experience required, Raiser's Edge preferred. Successful and proven experience with grant writing required. Budget development and monitoring preferred.

Special Knowledge & Skills: Excellent writing, editing and research skills, as well as strong verbal and interpersonal skills; knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies, as well as best practices in individual and institutional donor stewardship; excellent computer skills with Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; experience with donor databases, including reporting; ability to multi-task and meet multiple deadlines; self-starter who can initiate, implement and complete projects; familiarity with Chicago's philanthropic community; commitment to excellence and a passion for the mission and services of Deborah's Place
